By checking our work twice at each visit, we try to eliminate orthodontic emergencies. Some emergencies are inevitable, so when they do occur, we are available to help you. It is not normal to experience severe dental pain or discomfort, so please call us. Dr. Jerrold Hennes and our team can usually get problems resolved quickly. Sometimes you may be able to be temporally resolved the problem by yourself using some of the suggestions below. It is very important that you still call Shadowridge Orthodontics as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. Allowing damaged appliances to remain for an extended period may result in increased treatment time.
First Aid
As with any device, there is always the possibility of things just happening with orthodontic appliances. Below is a list of problems that sometimes occur, as well as some remedies and instructions in case they do happen. You can also call our orthodontist in Vista, California, if you have any questions.
Your teeth are sore after a visit
We recommend that you take a pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil as long as you aren’t allergic to them. Rinsing with a cup of warm water and a teaspoon of salt can also be soothing.
Food becomes stuck
Use dental floss or a proxy brush to dislodge the food.
A wire causes irritation
Push the wire away from the area using the eraser end of a pencil or a cotton swab. If the wire cannot be tucked away, cover the end of the wire with a small piece of wax, a cotton ball, or a piece of sugarless gum until you can see us for an adjustment.
The main wire comes out of the brace or tube
On a back molar tooth, attempt to reinsert the wire with a pair of needle-nosed pliers, fingers, or tweezers. Otherwise, you can leave it alone if the wire is not sticking you. Call the office and cover it with a piece of wax.
A bracket comes loose from a tooth
Call our office and cover it with a piece of wax.
Loose expander
Call our office and cover it with a piece of wax.
